Whilst these sweets became iconic in the 70s, it was during the 1930s when they were first produced. Fizzy cola bottles were made by a German company called Klene and quickly became popular in Europe before making their way across the Atlantic to the UK.
Klene was founded in 1887 by Eduard Klene and originally started as a small family business making cough drops and lozenges. It wasn't until the 1930s that they began to produce sweets, including the fizzy cola bottle, and that's when the company took off. The original recipe for these sweets is a closely guarded secret, but we know they are made from sugar and glucose syrup with a dash of natural flavouring to create that delicious cola taste. The sweet got its name from its shape, which, as you can probably guess, takes the form of a bottle.
Today the fizzy cola bottle is often associated with childhood and nostalgia as it is a classic penny sweet that many of us remember from our own childhoods.
